  • How many times a day should my dog be feed?

I have a one year old Daschund and was wondering how many
times a day should he be feed?

    My vet is on vacation.
He is healthy and weighs 10lbs.

I have always fed my dogs their daily allotment in two portions -- essentially breakfast and dinner, with a few training treats in between, or sometimes a chew of some sort. I think it's much better for their digestion, metabolism (stable insulin levels, for instance) and general comfort. You could even do three meals a day if you are reliably home with your dog during the day.

Whichever you choose, just be sure to be consistent. Dogs have an uncanny knack for knowing when it's "mealtime". My Grace is a more reliable timekeeper than Big Ben -- she finds me at 5:00 no matter where I am in the house!

I have always free fed at my house. My dogs eat when they are hungry.

I tried that at first and his weight went up over 10%. Every dog is different of course. Now we go with 2 times a day plus nutritional treats (home made some of em).

We feed ours twice a day (split the recommended amount) with treats in-between meal times.

I tried free feeding my dogs Helen it seems is an emotional eater.when we went to the store once she ate all the food that was there. and when my son gets playing rough with his dad she would go straight to the food and eat. I found out later that it really wasn't a good thing we let her free feed. The vet told me that rottweilers have a tendency to over eat. So now I feed them twice a day.

I can't wait to get those Sting ray tails and antlerz I bought last week. Thanks again Evey for telling us about that site. I think you may have created a monster.
